The Power of the Pineapple

What this sweet fruit with a rough exterior can teach us about intentions.

In preparation for this website to launch, I've been creating a series of posts about pineapples since I thought it would help people get acquainted with the website if I had a post about the same topic in every category. I thought I would have to get a little creative, but it's actually felt more like exploring. There's a really profound awareness that comes with not only learning how to treat your food but also how important it is to treat ourselves with care and consideration.

The pineapple really is such a unique fruit. It's one of those foods that seems so exotic and elevates each meal but also makes you feel like you are eating something that is actually good for you. I was always intimidated by it. I don't think I ever really cut one myself until preparation for this post. In a weird way, I felt a little kinship with this prickly fruit. I didn't really know how to handle it but now that I took the time to learn in an effort to teach others the same skills, I feel a lot more confident about it now. I think sometimes people are that way and we can draw some parallels.

Some cultures consider pineapples an international symbol of welcome and are often left on gate posts or door frames or are presented to someone as a signal of welcoming them as they are. They are even presented as a symbolic way of saying "you are perfect".

I know this site is usally more scientifically oriented in its posts, but I also believe in balance. Science is really just a more accurate form of observation. If you're interested in more of the science, it is linked below. But right now, I'll share with you some observations I had while working with pineapple:

  • they are tough but sweet

  • they have messy hair but we still find them beautiful

  • they are golden on the outside and bright on the inside

  • they have layers and details

  • they add variety to other things they are surrounded by

  • they require care and attention but with proper consideration they become valuable assets to any dish they are added to

  • they have a lot of potential (rings, chunks, skewers, dried, freeze-dried...the possibilities are endless!

It may sound silly, but I really did learn so much from creating a series of pineapple posts. Sometimes we negate the more simple truths in the name of science but I really believe a balance of both is what speaks to people. Evidence is so powerful but not if we can't speak it in a way that empowers the people it was evidenced for.
