Easter

IDEAS

2019

You don't have to be a Christian to appreciate the energy that comes with Easter. There are patterns and reminders of new life and resurrection everywhere around us, and Easter for me embodies that and always seems to be celebrated just when I need the reminder that the dead of winter can become new life in spring.

There is obviously not a lot of science behind Easter table-scape and kitchen decorating, however color psychology can play a unique role here. What is is that you want to give new life or resurrection to this Easter season? This colorful holiday after months of holidays limited to more traditional decorations lends itself to an special opportunity. Consider decorating more intentionally by researching and decorating with colors that symbolize the things in your life that you are creating space or meaning for. You can even take the opportunity to share with your kids or loved ones while including them in egg dyeing or Easter decorating. Use the link below (under "References") for the Color Psychology organization's website to explore more of the meaning behind colors and their power to influence our energy and space (1).

Like I said before, if you are reading this and you are not Christian, you still can take this opportunity and season to set similar goals. Traditionally the Easter holiday is covered in green and pastel shades and carrots, etc. Take my suggestions a remove the motifs that don't align with you spiritually if that feels more welcoming and comforting for your space.  If you are Christian or are celebrating with Christian friends, try being more intentional with your decorations and preparations. Really consider the meaning and intentions behind how you are setting up your space and experiment with more non-traditional styles of decorating. For example, these images are giving me my favorite table-scape vibes this season:

There will be a whole other article about food and egg dyeing, but also keep in mind the question of whether or not your preparations support you and your guest's healthy eating habits. Easter is traditionally a dessert and sugar-centric holiday, however there are plenty of ways to keep the holiday healthier without having to remove the fun and excitement. Try to have your home and dining experience set up in a way that supports your goals and allows for balance without setting a pattern for exception.

This Easter, I'm loving the more earthy vibes. For me, it's exciting to explore what I can make from the things I have in my pantry or what's growing in my backyard. The egg is such an easy and natural decorating motif this holiday, and it's about as sustainable as you can get. Consider what is important to you. If you want more energy, explore more vibrant hues. If you crave rest and rejuvination, side with some more subtle pastels. If you're navigating the balance of both, try something like the table-scape above and add some metallic, white, or light surfaces to bounce and balance the hues. I've included some of my favorite ideas and table-scapes this season below:

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THESE
  • The color's are vibrant and inviting but because they come from the candles, flowers, and eggs they give off a feeling of natural energy.

  • There is a blend of bright earth tones and pastels without clashing.

  • The gold is reflective and elevates the look of the whole table.

  • White plates and the marble counter utilize what you might naturally have on hand. They also allow for light and color to bounce off of them.

  • Everything here looks like you could take it right off your shelves or right out of your garden without looking like you just threw it together in 10 minutes.

  • There's something both exotic and inviting about it, making it both comforting and exciting to any type of guest in attendance.
